Originally established to be a Bronx-based campus for Hunter College (which also features in the QS ranking of US universities), CUNY Lehman College became an independent institution in 1967. Offering more than 90 academic degrees and specializations, the university has a total student body of nearly 15,000 students.

All first-year students at CUNY Lehman College participate in the Freshman Year Initiative - an academic program which is designed to help students get to know each other and become familiar with the college and their new environment. All students also take a mathematics course and a writing course to further assist them in their studies.
