Notre Dame of Maryland University
About
A private Catholic university in Baltimore, the Notre Dame of Maryland University can trace its origins back to 1873, when the School Sisters of Notre Dame set up the Notre Dame of Maryland Preparatory School and Collegiate Institute. Today, the university has a women’s college but also offers undergraduate and postgraduate education to men too.
Nearly 3,000 students are currently enrolled at the university, with over half of them studying at graduate level. The university’s College of Graduate Studies provides coeducational weekend and evening classes. Notre Dame of Maryland University also offers pre-professional programs such as pre-law and pre-pharmacy.
The university campus is located to the north of Baltimore, on the main business road connecting downtown to the northern suburbs. Traditionally a prosperous area, it is bordered to the south by a historic mansion owned by the Garrett family, whose wealth derives from the development of the railways in the mid-19th century. Of the many impressive buildings on campus, perhaps the most iconic is the wooden white tower of Gibbons Hall, one of the oldest university buildings.
