Pasto, officially titled as San Juan de Pasto, is home to approximately half a million people. Located 8,290 feet above sea level, the city is to the south of Colombia and close to the border with Ecuador. It takes its name from the Pastos, the indigenous people who lived in the region when Spanish settlers first arrived.
Students here can expect a colder climate than you might expect for somewhere so close to the equator; this is largely due to the city’s high altitude. Average high temperatures typically range between 15°C and 18°C while the coldest times of the year typically average around 11°C. The main economic activities in the city are centered around trade and the service industry, with the city enjoying strong connections to craftsmanship. An annual carnival, Carnaval de Negros y Blancos, features astonishingly intricate and well-crafted floats portraying various local legends, stories and traditions.
