Universidad Nacional de Itapúa

The National University of Itapua (UNI) is a leading Paraguayan university, originally established in 1996. The university focuses in particular on teaching subjects in the areas of engineering, medicine, business, science and technology, environmental studies, humanities and social sciences.

The university is located in the city of Encarnación, the capital city of Itapúa Department. The third-largest city in the country, the total population is close to 100,000 people. The city is noteworthy for having the largest settlement of Ukrainians in the country. Students based here, however, are more likely to be interested by the wide beaches and waterfront boardwalk, two aspects which have helped drive tourism in the city.

One other aspect of live in Encarnación which is likely to appeal to students is the annual Carnaval Encarnaceno, usually celebrated in February. This festival attracts more than 100,000 people to the city every year and sees different groups compete against each other in a parade. Judges award scores based on the following criteria: originality, design, charisma, dance, rhythm, beauty, and elegance.
