Research carried out by University faculty and graduate students is focused primarily on computer science, environmental science, experimental physics, computational sciences, and gives particular attention to areas that are of direct social and economic benefit to the southern region of Thailand, including wood science and engineering, Black Tiger prawns farming, orchard farming, bio-diversity, extracting natural products and herbal medicines from plants, etc. Research in the humanities and social sciences covers issues in the Muslim majority southern border provinces, cultural traditions in the south, Southeast Asian studies (especially Indonesia and Malaysia), and local resource management in the southern region. The University also promotes academic services to the local community. Such services include supporting the local economy and businesses by helping nurture small and medium enterprises (SMEs), as well as providing financial assistance to local communities to help in poverty alleviation.
